I don't want a job in sales
After two interviews, in two days, in one city (New York), I've decided that I don't want a job in sales. The fast/loud-talking, The competitive work environment, The abrupt behavior-it's not for me. Maybe I'm not in the position to be shutting off a whole area of potential jobs for myself but oh well-I'm putting myself there. I'm giving myself the power to say 'NO TO SALES!'.
So the past little while has been busy, busy, busy. It's almost like I don't even have time for a job! (I might be exaggerating).
Last week I moved Kate into her Brooklyn apartment. The apartment is very nice, lots of character. I think Kate will be happy there. The move was pretty hell-ish and involved carrying 30+ big boxes of books up and down two flights of stairs, a PACKED cargo van, a 4 hour trip to IKEA, rain and a stuck-in-the-doorway box spring. But, now that some time has passed, I can say that it went 'OK'. Forget the hours of traffic to and from Brooklyn, the fact that my sister didn't reimburse me for gas (I think she has a problem with that!), the fatigue-that's done and over with. I did my sisterly duties. The move went 'well'.
I also started to really apply for jobs last week. I mean, I've been applying all summer, but I actually sat at home all day last Wednesday and Thursday and did job searches/applications at monster.com and careerbuilder.com and nytimes.com etc. etc. Truth be told, it was kind of depressing sitting in the house, in pajamas, knowing that my friends were at work while I was lamely applying for work. I know that's the perspective I'm giving myself, that applying for jobs isn't really lame, that everyone has their own 'calling' and we can't all have jobs at the same time. I know that...but sometimes I don't feel it. Instead sometimes I feel pathetic for not having a job yet and hopeless that maybe the right job won't ever open up for me. So, hopefully there aren't too many more days of sitting at home applying for jobs in my future. I have to get a job sometime don't I?
And then last weekend I went to Allentown to visit with Rebecca (and Dan), and then Philly to visit with Heather and Mike and Jon (and Katelyn and Alex). YAY!
I got to Allentown Friday afternoon, hung out with Rebecca and Dan in their apartment, talked some 'Men's Health' gossip (since Rebecca is interning there and it's pretty much her life right now) and then we went to the movies around 7. We saw 'Super Bad' with some of the other 'Men's Health' interns. Hm. It was funny and I definitely approved on one hand, but it was vulgar and I was definitely grossed out on the other. I would probably give out recommendations based on who was asking me. After the movie the interns came back to Rebecca's and we all hung out and drank. Vodka-Cran anyone?
Saturday Rebecca and I did a driving tour of the area (it was too hot to move outside). She seems really happy in Allentown and knows a lot of the area's 'hot spots' already. I'm glad she likes her job and is finding new friends to hang out with too.
After I left Rebecca, I drove to Jon's house, parked my car there and he drove us up to Philly chez Heather and Mike. Their apartment is REALLY cute and in a few weeks when it's all set up and painted will be fabulous! We hung out until Katelyn and Alex arrived and then the girls went on an alcohol-finding mission. We bought some boxed wine (I know it sounds gross but it's pretty good and cost efficient-can't argue with that!) that we ate with quiche and 5-layer dip. MMMM. At around 10 we headed off to a birthday party near UPENN that Heather had been invited to through 'Teach for America' (that's what she's doing in Philly). It was an interesting party and I saw some RANDOM AU people there. Well, they're actually living in Philly now so I guess that would make me the RANDOM AU person...oh well. It's MY perspective here. I love going to parties so it's assumed that I had a good time.
We stayed at the party for a little bit and then headed home to see Alex and Katelyn back off to Stamford. Jon and I slept over and in the morning picked up my sister (who was also in Philly for the weekend), headed back to Allentown (only after Heather made us some pancakes on her new, huge, ridiculous griddle) and then Kate and I headed home. The fact that Kate made me stop at Target for 1 hour, made me take a ridiculously trafficy route to Brooklyn, and didn't pay me for gas is another story...
But-Heather and Mike seem happy living together and I think Philly is a good city for them to be in right now.
Adding the interviews in the city yesterday with the interview I had in the city today to this little recap I'd say that now you're all caught up. I don't know who 'you' are (kristyn?)...but I'm just saying.

Just Let Go
I finished working last Thursday...has it already been a week?
My summer work experience was finished with an employee breakfast Thursday morning. Jackson-Lewis doesn't hold back when it comes to catered meals. Our "humble" breakfast included an omelet chef, belgian waffles, a bagel platter, a pastry platter and a huge fruit plate. YUM. I wish I was one of those people who could just eat and eat and eat and never gain weight. I love the taste of food.
After work ended, I went and got my hair(s) cut. HM. It's the shortest that I've had it in recent years (a little below chin length) with side bangs (eh...don't know how I feel about that since I just spent a year+ growing out my side bangs from sophomore/junior) and layers. It's fun and something new at least. I like it.
Then, I headed up to the cape to a seriously delayed beach vacation! What a great long weekend :) I went to the beach a couple times, took a long bike ride, did some shopping, ate some GREAT food, played with the kittens, read some great books...
I feel fulfilled and rested and happy. And ready to start my job search! I might be lying about that...
I got home from The Cape and then, an hour later, I drove into the city with Katelyn for a Mae concert. The concert, well the part when Mae was playing, was FUN! They released a new CD yesterday so they played new songs from that and, of course, some of the old favorites. I still wish I was in a band...
I might not ever get over that fantasy.
Tomorrow I have two interviews with two different hiring agencies in the area. What to wear? I hope they go well. And even if they don't my new bf, monster.com, will there to comfort me when I get home.

The past few days...
have been very eventful. Where to begin?
Well, I guess it all began on Thursday night. I got rejected from the job I was really hoping for at Carnegie Hall (via a letter but that's another story). Meanwhile, my sister had looked at apartments on Wednesday and found one that she really like for us and that she wanted me to go in and sign for on Friday afternoon. I was all set to do that and REALLY excited about it. But after I got my rejection letter I freaked out and realized that I couldn't really sign for an apartment the following day because I didn't (and still don't) have a job, and how could I afford to pay for an apartment? When I talked about living with my sister initially I thought FOR SURE that I would have a job by August, esp. because I started applying for jobs in New York in May and have applied to over 80 different positions.
So I called my sister up to tell her this, and she got kind of annoyed, but we hung up with the conclusion that I would go see the apartment on Friday and take it from there.
FFWD a few hours, a few conversations, MANY tears and I realized I couldn't take the apartment... And I had to call my sister and tell her.
That was a very difficult decision to make because I KNEW that my sister was counting on me to live with her. I KNEW that I had told my sisster, reassured HER, that things would be fine once we found a place to live together. I KNEW that my sister needed a place in a few weeks time...
But on the other hand, I also knew that I couldn't spend the money on the up-front costs with no job (first month, last month, one month security, hiring movers etc. = $4,000). I also knew that I didn't want to have to take a job as a waitress or working in a coffee shop to be able to afford an apartment. I knew that I wanted to take time to find a real, entry-level, salary position for myself.
So I called my sister up, again, to tell her this...and what a conversation. She was FURIOUS. My sister has never been FURIOUS with me before. She said some of the most hurtful things that anyone has ever said to me...out of anger for 'fucking her over' and deciding not to take the apartment. That was really hard. She said she might not speak to me for a while and that she won't let me even help her find an apartment for just herself...
But as she said, "She knew I'd fuck her over"... :(
So I couldn't sleep at all on Thursday night, my eyes were red and swollen from crying...but I went into work as usual on Friday. Of course everyone was asking me, "Hey Becky! How are you today?" and I just answered "Oh, I'm well. Thanks"-even though I wasn't. I kept thinking about the decision I'd made and felt so awful. I had to mentally prepare before answering every phone call because I thought I was going to cry. I did make it to 1 pm though, no public tears.
Friday afternoon Katelyn came and picked me up and we went on an 'I don't want to be sitting at home feeling like shit for hurting my sister and having her hurt me in return' escapade to Kohls, Old Navy, GoodWill, the IMAX theater, Dunkin' Donuts-what a day! I stayed out of my house for 5 hours! It was fun. And I got a bathingsuit top for a pair of bathingsuit bottoms I already had and a purse. It was really nice of Katelyn to take me out and help me get my mind off of things. I appreciated it a lot. A LOT.
Then Friday night we went out for Alex's birthday! WOO! Yes, Alex's birthday might be on the 17th, but Heather was only home until Saturday morning so we wanted to fit in a foursome bday celebration. We went to a few bars in Stamford (I was DD and I was actually GLAD that it worked out that way. Emotional me + drinks = not a good idea), Alex got really drunk, Katelyn got really drunk, Heather and I giggled, we ate delish foods at the diner, we all looked REALLY cute-all things considered a very successful evening.
Saturday, I went into the city in the morning with Katelyn (she was going in to meet her Aunt so we took the train in together) and then Jon picked me up at Grand Central. We met up with Dave, Maayan and Dan, did lunch, walked around Central Park, did dinner, did hanging out. When I have low/no expectations Jon is great to hang out with. I hadn't seen him since the bad birthday weekend, but we had a GREAT time just joking around and laughing...
and I l-o-v-e Dave. He's so nice and funny. We were talking about my new favorite show 'Arrested Development' (yes I'm aware that I'm 4 years late on this trend), hehehehe.
I slept over with Jon, Dave, Natalia (another friend of Jon and Dave's who I'd met in Paris last year) and Maayan and then spent most of yesterday in the city as well. I saw 'Ratatouille' with Jon-WHAT A CUTE MOVIE! I'm so glad I saw it! Dan Levy, another Brandeis friend, came and we had lunch and went to MOMA.
I'm just happy thinking about it. First of all, I don't get to spend much time with guys so it was nice to just be around guys, even in a non-romantic way. Second of all, I just love being in New York so that was great. Third of all, I love laughing and after the hours and hours of crying I did last week it was great to just be silly and stupid and laugh. Fourth of all (do people even say 'fourth of all'?), this weekend reminded me that life goes on...even after hard decisions/times.
So, that was my past few days in a nutshell. A very big, multi-paragraph, nutshell.

Over a week
Well, it's been over a week since my last entry so I figured I should write something. I might have some things to say but can't really decide if they're worthwhile enough to write down in here.
Ah, forget it. Here are all the things that I have to say right now. Here's what's going on:
My head really itches...I don't know why...but according to my mom it's not lice.
I have 14 more minutes until I can go to lunch. On my lunch break I'm going to call about scheduling a hair cut for myself...I'm scared and excited! I hope this 'short hair' idea I have doesn't turn out poorly.
I'm wearing my new white shirt that I got at Kohls on Saturday and I love it! It's very comfortable, the only nice, plain, white shirt that I have. And I think it makes my boobs look bigger!
I bought a new sheet set yesterday at target.com. A comforter, bed skirt, pillow, sham, fitted sheet and flat sheet all for $60. I want it to get here now now now!
My sister is in New York, right now, looking at apartments for us. I have a good feeling about this which will hopefully be proven justified by the end of the day. Hey, I mean I already have a shower curtain, furniture, sponges, magnetic notepads for the fridge, posters, and sheets-nowI just need an apartment!
Heather is coming home from Philly today and staying until Sunday! I'm really excited to see her. We're going out tonight, and then for drinks to celebrate Alex's birthday on Friday (who cares if it's two weeks early?)!
I'm also going to The City on Saturday to hang out with Jon, Dave (<3s), Mayaan (their friend), Dave (<3s)'s sister...should be fun. I hope it's not too hot for me to look cute. I realize that hanging out with Jon is sometimes a bad idea for me but I have a good feeling about it and apart from all the stupid "I call you when I'm drunk" drama he is my friend and I do like to spend time with him.
It smells like cat litter in my office. I wonder if anyone else notices. I hope it's not me.
My last day of work is in one week! I am VERY happy. My boss is one of the most awkward and irritating people...and I can't quite figure out why. Maybe because she talks too quietly. Or because she has an annoying laugh. Or because she lingers at my desk for slightly too long.
After my last day of work, I'm going to the Cape from Thursday of next week to the following Tuesday morning! I realize, again, that hanging out with my mom is sometimes a bad idea for me but I have a good feeling about it and I love going to the beach. I need the beach this summer.
My old office is having Happy Hour today and I'm the only one not going.
I talked to Michelle and Melissa last night, together, it was really nice. Rum and shame...Rum and shame :D
I'm buying a new bathingsuit top tonight, and I don't feel bad about it. I can't possibly be the worst looking person at the beach this summer. I might even look NICE
I hate the printer at my desk. It's UNDER my desk so I have to bend down and shove my head under the desk every time there's a printer jam. Le sigh
